BCNS would like to thank our local Rotary for their generous grant to fund half of our new roof.  The roof has been in need of replacement for many years and this grant has helped make it all possible.  Our amazing cooperative continues to thrive and maintain/improve our beloved school from one generation to the next!   Read more…

       It’s the last month of school! Can you believe it? What a fun year we’ve had exploring, growing, learning through art and play, and creating lasting friendships. We will miss the children so much as they head off to summer and all of its wonderful opportunities for exploration and adventure. As we focus on gardens, worms, and seeds this month, our hands-on learning philosophy naturally takes us outdoors. We’ve been busy planting seeds, making stepping stones for the new butterfly garden, and enjoying the nature trail next to the school. Read more…

    Throughout the month of April, we will be learning about habitats, eggs, and animals that hatch from eggs. Our days will be filled with art, songs, stories, and observations inside and outside of the classroom all related to the wonder of springtime animals. Here’s a poem that the children enjoy performing:   Lots of animals come from eggs Some with fins and some with legs. Some that chatter and some that cheep Some that fly and some that creep. Some that slither and some that run Some with feathers and some with none. Animal eggs can be quite small Or just as big as a tennis ball. The animals here, they're quite a few Hatch from eggs and lay them, too! Staff Day: We will be putting the art panels together on Wednesday, April 26th. There will be no school that day.     We focus on the world around us during the month of March. The children especially enjoy exploring outer space – even though it’s an abstract concept for most preschoolers, it’s just too fun not to spend a little time learning about planets, astronauts, and rocket ships! Have you heard about our “space station” playhouse, complete with jet packs and switchboards? The Pre-K class also explores space through a variety of science activities, including balloon rockets and exploding moon rocks. Below is a poem we have been practicing: Put on your spacesuit we’re going to the moon Climb around the rocket ship.  We’re going to blast off soon.  Put on your helmet.  Strap yourself in tight.           Love and Friendship is the primary theme during the month of February. In preparation for our Pajama Day, we also explore the concept of opposites particularly day and night. What sounds do you hear during the day? During the night? Can you think of other opposites? Are there any words that you can think of that do not have an opposite? These are all great questions to ask your child. Nighttime Opposites (by Teacher Kari) When the sun goes down and the moon goes up, And our bellies are full and fed, My family says to me so softly/loudly, “It’s time to go to bed!” I put my favorite jammies on, My left slipper, then my right, I brush my top and bottom teeth ‘till they sparkle oh so bright! Happy New Year - the gumdrop tree is blooming! This is a magical tree that only blooms at BCNS…and only in January. Each day, the children are invited to pick a gumdrop off the tree and share a special wish they have. As you can probably imagine, some of these wishes can be very entertaining! Gumdrop Tree (by Teacher Kari)  We have a little gumdrop tree Its flowers are so sweet, First, I make a special wish Then I choose a piece to eat. Which color shall I choose today? Green, pink, white, or blue? How does the gumdrop tree keep blooming? And will my wish come true? We also begin our storytelling unit in January. Nursery rhymes are favorites and are also ideal for learning about story sequencing (beginning, middle, and end), characters, and setting.           December is a busy month at school...Our dramatic play area has transformed into Santa's Workshop! The children are enjoying writing "letters", using the elves' tools, putting gifts inside stockings and decorating our BCNS tree.  The lights that are strung up across the room make our little school a very festive place! :)  Gingerbread ornaments, finger painting trees, creating our elves, learning about Hannukah... its a special time for all at BCNS. November at BCNS!

          November is a special month at BCNS! The preschool class focuses on transportation while the pre-K class explores community helpers and the many people who do so much to make our community great. Of course, there is a lot of overlap in these topics as well. Some talking points with your child might include:   - What do the signs around town tell us? - Who are some people in our community that help make our lives better, safer, etc.? (librarians, police, firefighters, grocery store clerks, etc.) - How can you help others in our community?   The firefighters and police will be visiting sometime this month. Because of the unpredictability of their jobs, the day of their visits are often a surprise for the children. If you would like to come in and share about your position as a community helper, please let your child’s teacher know. We love having families in the classroom. November also brings up discussions about Thanksgiving. Being thankful is a difficult concept for many preschool-aged children but we do our best to acknowledge the spirit of Thanksgiving. It is a tradition at BCNS to read Stone Soup and create our own soup to eat at school with our friends. October at BCNS!

          Fall is here! The leaves have already started to fall into the playground – soon we will have big piles that always encourage wonderfully imaginative play. Our playhouse area is now a Farmers Market and the classroom is filled with new activities to explore and expand our cooperative learning strategies. As we learn more about the abundant fall harvest that is right here on Bainbridge Island, we will be making applesauce, exploring pumpkins through art and science, and so much more! Both classes are visiting the Suyematsu Farm pumpkin patch this month and will each have a sweet Halloween celebration at school. Here’s a classic poem that you might hear your child reciting at home:   5 Little Pumpkins Five little Pumpkins sitting on a gate. The first one said, "My, it's getting late." The second one said, "There are witches in the air." The third one said, "But we don’t care." The fourth one said, "We’ll run and run and run." The fifth one said, "It's just Halloween fun."         What a great start to the school year so far! We are enjoying getting to know the new children and becoming reacquainted with the many returning faces. In addition to getting to know each other and our school routines, we are also exploring topics related to seashores, shells, and boats this month. The children have a natural curiosity - as well as a lot of preexisting knowledge - about these topics thanks to the beautiful island that we call home. We will also be celebrating a special birthday this month.... Souris the mouse! Souris is a BCNS tradition that goes back almost 40 years. She comes to school for every birthday celebration.  We use Souris' birthday as a way to show the children how we celebrate birthdays at our school. We're sure you'll hear all about it!
